Holger Rune: “Draper played extremely well in the final, but I also didn’t use the few chances I had to make life difficult for him”

Danish tennis player Holger Rune commented on his defeat to Britain's Jack Draper in the Indian Wells Masters final

On his conclusions regarding his performance in Indian Wells
“Yes, there is a lot to learn, a lot to take away. It was a good two weeks. I played good games, very good tactical games. Today it was very clear that I did not play well enough. There is a lot to work on in the next days before Miami. It is always good to feel that you can do things better. And yet I reached the final, so it was still a good week. Obviously today I am disappointed, but it is what it is.”

On his performance in the final
“I just spoke to my coach after the match and we assessed everything pretty quickly. We talked about how Jack had a great tournament and he deserved to win today. He served amazingly, that’s for sure. But I think I could have done my part better. For example, when there was an opportunity to play aggressively, I didn’t take advantage of it very well. Yes, I played well in this tournament, I played tactically very smart, but I still didn’t play as if I was fully committed to my aggressive game. I think that’s what caused my loss today. Jack played extremely well, but I also didn’t take advantage of the few chances I had to make life difficult for him. I wasn’t able to do that because I didn’t have a lot of faith in every shot I took today.”

On the difference with his winning final at the Paris Masters in 2022
“Immediately after the match today, I thought about whether I remember how I played in Paris. And I said to myself, ‘Yes, and that’s how I want to play’. There was much more dedication to my tennis in that performance. I think when I was stressed then, my reaction was to get into the court more, to go to the net more, to be even more aggressive. And today, my reaction was, ‘I feel stressed, so I’ll go three meters behind the baseline’. When you play against a player like Jack, who is full of confidence, who beat Carlos yesterday, you can’t give him time. Because he will make you run from side to side and hit winners. I am very clear about what I need to train tomorrow and what I need to do better in Miami, is to really play much more aggressively.”
