Football club FC Barcelona has officially clinched the Spanish La Liga title for the 2024/25 season by defeating Espanyol 2–0 in Matchday 36. With this victory, Hans-Dieter Flick’s team became mathematically unreachable for Real Madrid with two rounds remaining, reports Baltimore Chronicle.
The decisive match, which took place during the fiercely contested Catalan derby, sealed the championship for the Blaugrana. Despite dominating possession, Barcelona failed to score in the first half. The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when one of the season’s standout performers, Lamine Yamal, opened the scoring. Fermín López sealed the win with a goal in the 90th minute.
Espanyol were reduced to ten men in the 80th minute following a straight red card shown to Leandro Cabrera. This moment further highlighted the historical rivalry between the two Catalan clubs.
Barcelona’s starting XI featured Szczęsny, Araújo, Christensen, García, Martín, de Jong, Olmo, Raphinha, Yamal, Pedri, and Lewandowski. Several substitutions were made throughout the match, with Cubarsí, Balde, Fermín, Gavi, and Fort coming off the bench.
With this result, the Catalan giants not only secured the league title but added it to their season’s silverware, which already included the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. Despite falling short in the Champions League semifinals, the team ends the season with a domestic treble.
