Ukrainian national team midfielder Alexander Zinchenko commented on the strong-willed victory over the Iceland team (2:1) in the final match of the play-off qualifying for the Euro -2024.
After the game ended, he shared his emotions in a comment to Suspilna Sport and stated that he was “proud to be Ukrainian.”
“Was this game emotional? One of those. I also remembered the match against the Swedish national team at the European Championship – similar emotions. Lack of emotions now? I left everything in the locker room. Everything was great, we qualified for the Euro. I would like to really thank all our fans, We felt throughout the match how they supported us and are supporting us; without them we would not have achieved this result.
I am proud to be Ukrainian, to be one of the people who are in Ukraine and give their lives to our freedom. This needs to be talked about and shouted about every day. And that's the only way we can win. It's hard to convey these emotions, honestly. I can’t fully comprehend and describe my emotions. Once again, I am proud to be Ukrainian. As I said, we are at the Euro.
Words from the coach during the break? First of all, he told us to believe in the result, that we could score. So that we continue to play, stick to our positions and believe that we can score. We also turned on each other, because we understood that a difficult 45 minutes awaited us for the sake of the result.
I won’t say that the Icelanders beat us in the first half, we just conceded the goal. The individual skill of one of their players (Albert Gudmundsson – approx.). Even before the game he said that we need to pay attention to several players. It was this player who scored three times against Israel, did a great job and scored a magnificent goal. But we reacted properly and achieved an important result.
