Photo by surgeons at St. Nikolai in Lviv for the first time operated on an 11-year-old boy with cancer using the Da Vinci Si robotic system, donated by philanthropists.
The First Medical Association of Lvov reported this on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.
“The Da Vinci robot surgeon operated on the first child at St. Nicholas Hospital!” Our patient — An 11-year-old boy with cancer,” the message says.
Da Vinci Si is one of the most modern robotic systems in the world. Surgeons at the children's hospital have long dreamed of one that would be more compact and easier to use. Thanks to the smaller diameter of the instruments and optics, the robot can operate even on newborns. With minimal trauma to nearby organs and structures, reduced risk of blood loss and shortened intervention time, which means faster recovery for the youngest patients.
“Until now, our specialists shared one operating room with surgeons from the adult hospital of St. Panteleimon, who have been using the robot since 2020. But thanks to philanthropists — companies Meest Post and Rostyslav Kisil — The children's hospital now has its own Da Vinci. And if in three years pediatric surgeons performed a little more than forty robotic operations, then this year they plan to double the number of such interventions, the medical institution added.
As Ukrinform reported, cardiac surgeons at the St. Panteleimon Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv performed the first heart surgery in Ukraine using the Da Vinci robot, saving a man with a pre-heart attack.
