A study conducted by scientists at Colorado State University revealed that consistent physical activity can significantly slow the process of memory deterioration in elderly individuals. The study involved 60 participants aged 60 to 80 years who did not have severe cognitive impairments, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, , citing Baku.ws.

Over a 12-week period, participants engaged in aerobic exercises such as brisk walking and cycling for 30 minutes daily. Results showed that the group performing physical activities experienced a notable improvement in the functions of the hippocampus — the brain region responsible for memory.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detected an increase in hippocampal volume among the active participants, indicating enhanced brain neuroplasticity. Additionally, cognitive tests demonstrated improvements in short-term memory and information processing speed.

These findings emphasize the importance of physical activity as a potential preventive measure against age-related memory decline. Researchers plan to continue studying the effects of various types of physical exercises on cognitive health in older adults.
