A child has been born in Sweden for the first time following a womb transplant performed using robotic surgery, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing the Daily Star.

The operation took place in October 2017 at the University of Gothenburg. The donor was the patient’s mother, whose uterus was removed through robotic laparoscopy. Ten months after the transplant, an embryo created via IVF was implanted into the new uterus.

The pregnancy progressed without complications, and at 36 weeks, the woman delivered a baby boy weighing 2.9 kilograms via planned cesarean section.

This case marks the first instance in the world of a child being born following a uterus transplant performed with robotic surgical assistance. Previously, children had been born in Sweden after uterus transplants, but not with the use of robotic technology. Globally, 15 children have been born following uterus transplants, nine of them in Sweden.

During the operation, surgeons controlled robotic arms using magnified 3D imagery of the patient’s abdominal cavity. This allowed the procedure to be carried out through small incisions, reducing risks for the donor and speeding up recovery. In the future, robotic surgery is expected to be used not only for the donor but also for the recipient.
