“The Pulmonary Hypertension Center was opened on the eve of the International Day of Rare Diseases, which include pulmonary hypertension,” the message says.

< The City Council noted that the center will operate on the basis of the cardiac surgery department of the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lvov, since most patients with pulmonary hypertension are treated by cardiac surgeons.

But this disease is also characterized by the appearance of concomitant pathologies. Therefore, the multidisciplinary team of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center will fight them: cardiologists, pulmonologists, pediatricians, surgeons, otolaryngologists and other specialists at St. Nicholas Hospital.

“In the new center, based on our cardiac surgery, children will be able to receive both outpatient and inpatient care. Today, fortunately, there is a large selection of medicines in Ukraine. And we have a good material and technical base for treatment, high-quality echocardiography devices, and the ability to conduct catheterization of the heart to determine the type of pulmonary hypertension. All this can now be done in one place”, – informed the head of the pulmonary hypertension center at St. Children's Hospital. Nicholas First Medical Association of Lvov Olga Pasternak.

The City Council emphasized that the idea of opening the center was realized with the support of the Charitable Foundation “Sisters of Delilah.” and NGO “Rare Disease Association of Ukraine – pulmonary hypertension”. These two organizations helped with medications and special devices for treating patients.

It is specified that in the region as of now there are 11 small patients with pulmonary hypertension.

Pulmonary hypertension – This is a pathological increase in pressure in the pulmonary artery, which is caused by narrowing of the pulmonary vessels. In the future, this leads to an increase in the load on the right side of the heart, and sometimes to dysfunction of the organ. The disease occurs in 6 children per 1 million.

Doctors assure that although the disease is incurable, if you receive proper help, you can learn to live with it.

Patients with such a rare disease have be under the supervision of specialists; receive proper treatment with modern medications. Without all this, the disease can quickly progress and lead to disability or even death of the child.

As Ukrinform reported, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is one of the causes of death in the world.
