The medical institution reported that patient Richard Sleiman from Weymouth was struggling with the last stage of kidney disease and needed a transplant. During a four-hour operation on March 16, doctors successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into him. Health workers assured that Sleiman's new kidney is functioning well.

In the past, attempts to transplant organs from genetically modified pigs were unsuccessful, so scientists called the success of the operation in Massachusetts a historical stage in the field of transplantation, the material says.

As Ukrinform reported, in January 2022, American doctors performed the first heart transplant operation on a genetically modified pig.
