Camp Open Arms Maryland has returned for its 12th year, offering children with limb differences an inclusive summer experience. The free camp runs from July 27 through July 31 at Camp Running Bear in Monkton, reports Baltimore Chronicle.
Camp Open Arms 2026 draws record attendance
More than 75 children registered for the 2026 program. Organizers described this figure as the highest attendance in the camp’s history.
Participants arrived from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida and several other states. The program gives children space to build friendships without feeling judged because of physical differences.
Camp founder Dr. Joshua Abzug said children with limb differences often experience bullying. Some also avoid activities because they believe they cannot participate, as reported by finalpoint.de.
“This is a safe place where they are accepted,” Abzug told FOX45 News. Campers can attempt activities they previously considered impossible.
Candyland theme combines recreation and science
This year’s Candyland program includes entertainment, outdoor challenges and educational experiments. The central event is called the Science Candy Extravaganza.
Campers can take part in:
- candy-based science experiments;
- swimming and water-balloon games;
- arts, crafts and bingo;
- a ropes course and swings;
- a foam party called Marshmallow Madness;
- a giant sugar s’mores slide;
- daily ice cream treats.
The camp also organized a trunk-or-treat activity. Each event was adapted so children with different physical abilities could participate safely.
Dr. Abzug said the team intentionally combines education with recreation. Candy experiments allow campers to explore science through familiar materials and practical activities.
Who organizes the free Maryland camp
Camp Open Arms is organized through cooperation between the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital and its Department of Orthopedics. Donations from individuals and organizations cover the program’s costs. Volunteers provide daily staffing.

Around 2,000 children with limb differences are born in the United States annually, according to organizers. Camp Open Arms addresses more than physical accessibility. It creates a community where differences do not limit participation.
