Popular citrus fruit has sharply increased in price in Ukraine

Prices for tangerines have gone up.

Prices for tangerines are rising in Ukraine. This happened due to a decrease in the harvest as a result of unfavorable weather in Turkey and Spain, an increase in logistics costs, and the devaluation of the hryvnia.

This was reported by the head of the marketing department of the Shuvar market, Tatyana Popovich, writes AgroTimes.

In particular, the growth in prices for tangerines was facilitated by the increase in demand, so after a peak of 97 UAH/kg in December, they fell to 60-65 UAH/kg in January.

According to Popovich, prices for citrus fruits should continue to decline, unless devaluation and import problems interfere.

“Fluctuations in prices for tangerines in January 2025 were caused by a combination of internal and external factors that affected both imports and the domestic market of Ukraine,” she said.

The expert explained that tangerines are supplied from Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Greece and Italy. In January, weather conditions in the producing regions significantly complicated the harvest.

In Turkey, rains and frosts reduced the harvest, which led to a reduction in export volumes. Spain is facing a drought.

Popovych emphasized that during the war, the costs of transporting imported products increased significantly.

“The devaluation of the hryvnia increased the cost of imports, which affected the prices of tangerines. In December and January, demand for tangerines traditionally grows due to the New Year and Christmas holidays. The change in the holiday calendar had an impact. However, due to smaller supply volumes, even after the holidays, prices remained above average,” the expert added.

According to her, if weather conditions in tangerine-growing countries stabilize and logistics costs decrease, prices may begin to gradually decline until the end of winter.

Earlier it was reported that prices in Ukraine will only rise. In particular, milk is becoming more expensive due to a shortage, and butter is already difficult to find for less than 100 hryvnia.
