Joint “call for action” is intended to stop the fleet of about 600 ships, which, according to Western countries, are used by Moscow to transport about 1.7 million barrels of oil per day, according to a statement released by Downing Street.
The British government also announced sanctions against 11 tankers used to transport Russian oil.
“Together with our European partners, we have sent a clear signal to those who facilitate Putin’s attempts to circumvent sanctions: we will not allow Russia’s “shadow” fleet and “It allows dirty money to move freely through European waters and jeopardize our security,” Starmer said.
The oil tanker fleet is being used to finance the Russian war machine in Ukraine and also poses an environmental threat to Europe's waterways, it says British government statement. Some of the ships also act as Russian listening stations and transport weapons to Russia, the statement added.
