US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that this decision will strengthen the energy and economic security of the United States, reduce and subsequently eliminate dependence on Russia in civil nuclear energy.

“This new law restores American leadership in the nuclear sector. It will help secure our energy sector for future generations. And, building on the unprecedented $2.72 billion in federal funding that Congress recently appropriated at the President's request, it will jump-start new uranium enrichment capacity in the United States and send a clear signal to industry that we are committed to the long-term growth of our nuclear sector “Sullivan noted.

He also spoke about the US commitment made last December – along with Canada, France, Japan and the UK – to jointly invest $4.2 billion in expanding uranium enrichment and conversion capacity.

“I am proud to to say that thanks to these funds provided by Congress, we have significantly exceeded this commitment and are working with industry to realize this ambitious goal,” the US National Security Advisor emphasized.

Recall

“The Department of the Treasury » wrote that on April 30, the US Senate voted to approve a law banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia.

The law prohibits the import of uranium from Russia until 2040, allowing temporary exceptions until January 2028. The ban will be implemented 90 days after the law takes effect.

According to the US Department of Energy, Russia supplied almost a quarter of the enriched uranium used to fuel the US fleet from more than 90 commercial reactors, making it the No. 1 foreign supplier .
