According to Fontanka, air defense systems tracked two drones in the region for several hours; they were noticed by an emergency worker from eight o'clock in the evening. Having almost reached St. Petersburg, they changed course towards Ust-Luga. A video of the drone passing was published on Telegram. Leonid Mikhelson and Gennady Timchenko, whom Putin considers his friend, are the largest shareholders of Novatek.
At the time of the attack, ships flying the flags of Panama, Malta, Liberia, Gabon, Greece, Hong Kong, the Marshall Islands and the Cayman Islands were at the terminal. The terminal in Ust-Luga is one of two complexes of «Novatek» for processing gas condensate, which in 2022 processed 6.9 million tons of condensate for export.
Press service of «Novatek» pointed to «external influence» as the cause of the fire and announced the suspension of terminal operations. Ukrainian sources, including «RBC-Ukraine», claim that the attack on the terminal in Ust-Luga was organized by the Security Service of Ukraine, considering it an important facility in the context of fuel supplies for the Russian armed forces.
It is also worth noting that Putin was familiar with the former co-owner of the «Petersburg Oil Terminal» (PNT), which also came under attack this week, on January 18.
The son of the current co-owner of PNT, Mikhail Skigin, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and Vladimir Putin for the prompt work of air defense after the attack by Ukrainian drones. Skigin — the son of entrepreneur Dmitry Skigin, a key figure in the St. Petersburg oil business, with whom Vladimir Putin was also familiar.
