In Ukraine, prices for garlic have reached a record high high rates.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to EastFruit.
According to analysts, since mid-December, prices for garlic on store shelves have exceeded 200 hryvnia per kilogram. This is an absolute record, because even during the pandemic, garlic was cheaper.
“Garlic has become more expensive due to several factors. Firstly, demand for it has increased in Europe. Experts attribute this to the increase in the number of immigrants from countries where garlic is an important component of national cuisine. In German and Austrian supermarkets, the average price is about 6 euros, although there are cases with sky-high prices of almost 20 euros per kilogram,” the report says.
The price increase was also influenced by the fact that supply is significantly less than demand for the product. Today, Spain is the main producer of garlic, but even there its reserves are already running out.
“This year, Spanish garlic producers have completely exhausted their reserves, which has not happened in the last three years. This happened due to weather conditions, increased labor costs and transportation. Now even alternative suppliers (from South America) have exhausted their stocks, which allows prices to rise until the new season,” said Danny Dean, a representative of the Dutch vegetable import company Denimpex.
Ukraine is also running out of its garlic stocks. Therefore, its price is unlikely to decrease in the near future.
