Who is smarter – cats or dogs: research data from scientists

Dog and cat owners have a long-standing debate about whose pet is smarter.

About this information was reported by T4, URA-Inform reports.

Dogs are known for their learning ability, while cats are famous for their good memory.

Scientists from different countries, including the United States, Brazil, Denmark and South Africa, conducted a study aimed at comparing number of neurons in the cerebral cortex of dogs and cats. Neurons play a key role in information processing, so a higher number of them may indicate higher cognitive abilities.

The study results showed that dogs have about 530 million neurons, while cats have only about 250 million. This significant difference suggests that dogs have a higher level of intelligence as measured by the number of neurons.

In addition, the study compares the intelligence of dogs with wild animals such as raccoons and lions, and cats with brown bears . Among primates, orangutans and gorillas are the smartest, having about 9 billion neurons. Elephants, with their 5.6 billion neurons, also have impressive cognitive capabilities.
