The nationwide launch is scheduled for September 1. Some franchise locations could begin selling the nuggets earlier, depending on local availability.
The returning nuggets use the familiar chicken base with a crispy tempura-style coating. That coating gets its heat from aged cayenne and chili peppers.
McDonald’s currently lists several order sizes for the spicy nuggets:
- 6 pieces;
- 10 pieces;
- 20 pieces;
- 40 pieces.
Availability may vary by restaurant. McDonald’s describes the comeback as a limited-time promotion rather than a permanent menu change.

Mighty Hot Sauce is returning too
McDonald’s is pairing the nuggets with Mighty Hot Sauce. The sauce combines crushed red pepper, spicy chilies, garlic and a slightly sweet finish.
The combination first attracted significant attention when Spicy Chicken McNuggets debuted in September 2020.
According to Scripps News, the original release sold out within about 2 weeks. Contemporary reporting also showed McDonald’s expected most restaurants to run out shortly after launch.
