We are talking about the use of languages of national minorities in the provision of public and social services, in interaction with the authorities, in the provision of medical care and other areas.
Government adopted the Methodology for the use of languages of national minorities where they traditionally and compactly live.
Prime Minister Denis Shmigal announced this at a meeting of the Cabinet.
According to him, we are talking about fulfilling Ukraine’s obligations to the EU to protect the rights of national minorities.
“In accordance with the relevant law “On National Minorities” we adopt the Methodology for using the languages of national minorities where they traditionally and compactly live, – explained Szmigal.
He noted that they will ensure the right of the national minority to develop their language and at the same time preserve all the advantages of the Ukrainian language as the state language.
Added. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration noted that the Methodology establishes uniform conditions and procedures for the use of languages of national minorities in those localities in which they traditionally live, or in which national minorities make up a significant part of the population (more than 15%). /p>
The methodology was developed after a round of consultations with colleagues from the Council of Europe, the European Commission and representatives of public organizations of national communities of Ukraine.
The document defines the areas of public life in which minority languages can be used along with the state language. This applies to:
- communication with authorities and the provision of public services;
- providing medical care;
- providing topographical information;
- dissemination of information for general information; li>
By the way, the use of the language of a national minority (community) is permitted by decision of the relevant village, town or city council.
- On December 8, the Verkhovna Rada adopted as a basis and in general bill 10288-1 on amendments to certain laws of Ukraine to take into account the expert assessment of the Council of Europe and its bodies on the rights of national minorities (communities) in certain areas. Subsequently, President Zelensky signed the law.
