On January 30, the Orthodox Church commemorates three great saints: Basil the Great, John the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. This day is called the Feast of the Three Saints. Basil the Great is known for his charitable activities, theological works, and reforms in monastic life. John the Theologian is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, the author of the Fourth Gospel and the Book of Revelation. John Chrysostom was the Archbishop of Constantinople, famous for his sermons and struggle for the moral purification of the church. On January 30, people observed the weather and drew conclusions about future changes. It was believed that if there was a lot of frost on the trees, this foreshadowed a quick warming. If hares ran into the gardens, they expected severe frosts. On this day, it was not recommended to do heavy manual labor, especially related to a needle or yarn. It was forbidden to quarrel, swear, and hold grudges, as it was believed that this could negatively affect the well-being of the family.
Many important events occurred on this day in history. In 1649, King Charles I was executed in England, and in 1847, the city of Yerba Buena received its modern name – San Francisco. In 1918, the Ukrainian Central Rada adopted a decision to create a volunteer Ukrainian army. Also in 1992, Iceland officially recognized the independence of Ukraine, and our state established diplomatic relations with Spain.
January 30 is also celebrated as several professional and international holidays. In Ukraine, on this day, specialists of the military-social department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are honored, who provide support to servicemen and veterans. The world celebrates the School Day of Nonviolence and Peace, which emphasizes the importance of tolerance in educational institutions. In addition, NASA Memorial Day is celebrated – honoring astronauts who died during space missions.
