Why the US cannot decide the fate of Ukraine without its participation: the main arguments

During a recent speech, Donald Trump evaded a direct answer to a question about the status of Ukraine, leaving uncertainty about the US position. For Kyiv, this is not just a detail – it is a fundamental moment in relations with Washington, writes IZ.

As noted by the famous blogger Yigal Levin, Western partners, in particular European leaders, have already made it clear: no negotiations can take place without the direct participation of Ukraine. Historical precedents remind us that countries that allowed decisions to be made behind their backs found themselves trapped in geopolitical conspiracies. Czechoslovakia in 1938 had a powerful army and military industry, but international isolation made it defenseless. Kyiv is not going to repeat this mistake.

The US risks losing an important ally if it continues to ignore this critical moment. Ukraine has already clearly outlined its red lines: no agreements can be signed without its direct participation, and even more so on terms favorable to the Kremlin. If Washington does not change its rhetoric, Kyiv may reconsider all partnerships with the US, up to and including a complete withdrawal from the agreements. Military support is important, but the country's sovereignty is priceless. The choice that Ukraine will have to make will be difficult, but it will become necessary if its allies begin to act contrary to its interests.

European countries have already taken the initiative, strengthening cooperation with Ukraine. Contracts with giants such as Rheinmetall, strategic agreements with the UK and active interaction with France, the Baltics and Scandinavia demonstrate that Kyiv has an alternative. Building a long-term partnership in Europe can become a key vector of development. The US should understand that losing Ukraine as an ally will be a serious blow to its geopolitical influence.

American policy sometimes needs harsh reminders. Ukraine does not need to prove its significance – it should be obvious. Those who question its subjectivity should remember that history does not tolerate weakness. If an ally starts to play against you – it is no longer an ally. Ukraine has already shown that it is ready to fight for its interests, even if it means revising global alliances.
