The Dutch government has reported a significant increase in espionage activity originating from China, directly threatening the country’s national interests. According to data from the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), China’s main targets of espionage remain the defense sector, high-tech companies, and the Netherlands’ political system, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing Reuters.

The AIVD intelligence service notes that China is increasingly striving to acquire strategic knowledge and innovations that could strengthen its technological and economic advantage. Particular attention has been drawn to companies engaged in cutting-edge developments in quantum technology and nanotechnology. The report also states that Chinese state entities employ not only official channels but also covert influence networks and cyber espionage.

AIVD Director Eric Akkermans stated that China is more frequently attempting to manipulate the open nature of Dutch society, rendering the country vulnerable to hidden pressure and interference. According to the official, despite broad diplomatic and economic ties between the countries, Beijing’s intelligence activities are systemic and long-term rather than incidental or localized.

The report further highlights that the Netherlands is among the strategic states targeted by Chinese intelligence due to its membership in the European Union, NATO, and its advanced technological infrastructure. AIVD emphasizes that such actions by China pose a real threat to the stability of the democratic system and the country’s sovereignty.

Intelligence services call for strengthened cybersecurity measures, increased awareness in both the private sector and government institutions, and expanded international cooperation to counter foreign threats.
