Trey Mancini retirement closes one of the most memorable modern careers connected with the Baltimore Orioles. The 34-year-old announced his departure from professional baseball on August 18, 2026, ending an eight-season MLB career, reports the Baltimore Chronicle.
The announcement first appeared on Mancini’s Instagram. It was later confirmed by MLB and reported locally by WMAR-2 News.
Trey Mancini Says Goodbye After 836 MLB Games
Mancini leaves baseball with 836 MLB appearances and 129 home runs. He played for Baltimore, Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles.
His relationship with Baltimore, however, defined much of his career. The Orioles selected him in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He reached the majors in 2016.
His story changed dramatically in 2020.
Mancini was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer and missed that season while receiving chemotherapy. He returned in 2021 and hit 21 home runs. MLB named him American League Comeback Player of the Year.
Several moments now define the Trey Mancini career:
- MLB debut with Baltimore in 2016;
- return from Stage 3 colon cancer in 2021;
- AL Comeback Player of the Year award;
- emotional final Orioles home run on Mo Gaba Day;
- 2022 World Series championship with Houston.
Those achievements explain why Mancini became more than another productive Orioles hitter. His cancer comeback created a particularly strong connection with Baltimore supporters.

From Baltimore to a World Series Championship
Baltimore traded Mancini to the Houston Astros in August 2022. Months later, Houston won the World Series.
| Career milestone | Year |
|---|---|
| MLB debut with Orioles | 2016 |
| Cancer treatment | 2020 |
| Comeback season | 2021 |
| Traded to Astros | 2022 |
| World Series title | 2022 |
| Final MLB return | 2026 |
| Retirement | 2026 |
Mancini eventually returned to the majors with the Los Angeles Angels in June 2026. He played five games and went 4-for-13 before being designated for assignment.
That brief return gave him one final major-league chapter. He had not appeared in MLB since 2023.
Why Trey Mancini’s Retirement Matters in Baltimore
Mancini specifically thanked Baltimore’s medical professionals and Orioles staff in his farewell. He credited their early action and expertise with saving his life.
He also thanked supporters, especially fans in Birdland. That relationship may remain the strongest part of his Baltimore legacy.
Mancini finishes his career as a World Series champion and comeback award winner. For Orioles fans, however, his return after cancer remains the defining image.
