In Ukraine, quotas for the use of the Ukrainian language in the media have increased

From January 1, 2024, quotas for the Ukrainian language have increased in Ukraine in television media and radio, because certain provisions of Article 40 of the Law of Ukraine “On Media” have come into force, which provide for an increase in the volume of programs in the state language on television and radio.

“The minimum share of Ukrainian language programs on radio, as well as in television media of the national and regional categories increases from 75% to 90%, and in television media of the local category – from 60% to 80%,” said Taras Kremen, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language . .

In particular, we are talking about programs in the state language, including films. According to the Law, their number in the total weekly volume of broadcasting by television broadcasters in each time period for television channels of the national and regional categories between 7 and 18 and between 18 and 22 hours must be at least 90 percent, and for television channels of the local category – at least 80 percent of the total duration of programs (or parts thereof).

Radio broadcasters are required to provide at least 90 percent of the weekly volume of programs, including news and analytical blocks, entertainment programs (hosts, announcers of radio programs ) in the state language.

Also, according to the law, the weekly volume of news programs in the state language should be at least 90 percent of the total duration of all news programs distributed by such a broadcaster in each period of time between 7 hours and 18 hours and between 18 hours and 22 hours.

As Kremin noted, these innovations are a significant step in protecting the Ukrainian-language information space and the rights of citizens to receive information in the state language. He also expressed hope that the share of programs in the state language on TV channels and radio stations, including those speaking at the local level, will increase significantly.
