The authorities of the Russian Federation have canceled pardons for prisoners fighting in Ukraine. The Washington Institute for the Study of War suggested what could be the reason for Moscow's decision regarding convicted recruits.

ISW analysts in their report drew attention to the fact that Russian prisoners were no longer offered pardon for participating in the so-called “special operation”. Moscow has also begun to significantly change the conditions of service in Putin’s army for convicts, NBN reports.
Experts write that the Russian Federation has probably not recruited prisoners into the “Storm Z” units since August last year, recruiting them to the armed forces “Storm V” with new contract conditions.
The Institute for the Study of War recalled that those previously convicted of participating in hostilities were promised six-month contracts and pardons. Now prisoners cannot even count on parole, and their contracts are extended indefinitely.
According to analysts, Moscow has decided to introduce limited conditions of service in Putin’s army for convicts due to the large losses of prisoners in the war in Ukraine and the relatively short terms of their contracts. Such decisions allow the Russian leadership to keep more convicts at the front.
The new contract terms for service in Storm V likely complicate the recruitment of prisoners, but Russian officials regularly forced them to sign the document.
ISW added that new contracts for convicts also allowed Moscow to relieve the burden on the budget of the aggressor country by not providing payments in the event of injury or death of an occupying prisoner.
Earlier, analysts spoke about the unsuccessful attempts of the Russian Armed Forces to withdraw from positional warfare.
