Members of the parliament, including Deputy Head of the Foreign Affairs Committee Urmas Paet, have urged EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell to take action if Mongolia, as a member of the International Criminal Court, fails to honour its obligations and arrest Putin.
Paet stresses that Mongolia is in a unique position to demonstrate its commitment to international law. He is confident that the country is obliged to comply with the ICC arrest warrant and hand over the Russian leader to The Hague. Otherwise, according to Paet, the EU should take tough diplomatic and economic measures against Mongolia.
Putin’s visit to Ulaanbaatar was his first to a country under the ICC’s jurisdiction since an arrest warrant was issued for him in March 2023 on charges of illegally deporting Ukrainian children and other citizens to Russia. This visit caused a stir, especially against the backdrop of the ICC's own statements about the need to execute the warrant.
Against the backdrop of these events, a small protest took place in the capital of Mongolia, where demonstrators demanded Putin's deportation and held Ukrainian flags. At the same time, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expressed disappointment over the Mongolian authorities' decision not to detain the Russian leader.
