The word “umnichka” does not exist in the Ukrainian language – it is a calque from Russian, which should not be used if you are fighting for the purity of your speech and want to eradicate surzhyk. There are several correct options that you can use to praise someone, the NBN publication reports.
To express approval and admiration for a person's mental abilities in Ukrainian, use the following words: розумник (розумничка), молодець (молодчинка). You can also say “wise head” or “svitla head“.
In addition, we recommend that you remember several characteristics of a smart person, which are synonyms for the word “smart”: tense, intelligent, smart, right-thinking.
Note that you should also avoid the word “intelligent” (in Ukrainian “tyamushchy”), which is also Russian.
