Bernd Helzenbein won the World Cup in 1974.
On Monday, April 15, the outstanding German football player, the 1974 world champion, passed away Bernd HelzenbeinHe died at the age of 78 as a result of a long battle with a serious illness.
The sad news was announced by his former club Eintracht Frankfurt.
Helzenbein played most of his playing career with Eintracht “. He spent 14 years at the Frankfurt club (1967 – 1981), playing as a midfielder and striker.
Bernd played more than 500 matches for the Eagles, in which he scored more than 200 goals. He is still Eintracht's top scorer in the Bundesliga with 160 goals scored.
Together with the Frankfurt team, Helzenbein won the German Cup three times (1974, 1975, 1981), and also won the UEFA Cup (1979/80).
For the German national team (West Germany), Bernd played 40 matches and scored five goals. He became world champion in 1974 and vice-champion of Europe in 1976.
It was Helzenbein who earned a penalty in the victorious final of the 1974 World Cup against the Netherlands (2:1), from which Paul Breitner equalized.
After retiring as a football player, Bernd worked in various positions at Eintracht from 1988 to 2022, including being the club’s vice-president and head of the scouting department.
We would like to remind you that Helzenbein is not the only German legend football, which in 2024 will go into eternity. Thus, at the beginning of January, the 1974 world champion and two-time winner of the Ballon d'Or (1972, 1976) Franz Beckenbauer died, and at the end of February, the author of the winning goal in the World Cup final died -1990 Andreas Brehme.
