Angela Carini refused to compete with an opponent who had previously failed a gender test.
At the 2024 OlympicsA scandal erupted in Paris during a 1/8 finals bout of the women's boxing tournament in the weight category up to 66 kg.
Italian Angela Carini withdrew during a fight against an opponent from Algeria, transgender Iman Khelif.
46 seconds after the start of the fight, the Italian athlete, who had managed to take a powerful blow from her opponent, refused to continue the fight.
During the announcement of the winner, Carini refused to shake her opponent's hand, and then knelt down and burst into tears.
“I am used to suffering, but I have never received such blows, it is impossible to continue. I cannot say that it is illegal. I entered the ring to fight. But after the first minute I no longer wanted to. I began to feel severe pain in my nose. I didn’t give up, but the blow was too painful, and I said that’s enough. I’m walking with my head held high,” the Italian commented on her withdrawal from the fight.
It should be noted that in 2023, the Algerian failed the gender test and was disqualified from the World Championships due to excessively high testosterone levels. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed her to participate in the 2024 Olympics.
Ukraine is represented at the XXXIII Summer Olympics by 140 athletes competing in 23 sports. The Games in Paris will last until August 11.
The “blue-yellows” currently have two medals in their collection at the 2024 Olympics: Olga Kharlan won “bronze” in sabre fencing, and Serhiy Kulish won “silver” in shooting.
