Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois shared his opinion regarding the episode with the disallowed goal of Atletico forward Julian Alvarez in the post-match penalty shootout, which was cancelled due to a double touch on the kick.
“Ultimately, penalties are a lottery. I thought Julian touched the ball twice and I told the referee that. They were a bit unlucky. We didn't play our best game, but we went through – and that's the main thing.
UEFA sees everything clearly. I am tired of this constant whining and complaining about such things. The referee does not give preference to any team – neither in Spain nor in Europe. I think they saw everything clearly, that is why they made such a decision. They are humans and can make mistakes, but thanks to VAR technology everything was obvious,” the Belgian said.
Let us recall that Real Madrid beat Atletico in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League (2:1, 0:1, 4:2 on penalties).
