Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open after defeating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 16 with a score of 6-4, 7-6(5), reports Baltimore Chronicle.
The match lasted one hour and 41 minutes. In the first set, Svitolina converted two break points and allowed just one from her opponent. The second set saw a tighter contest: Svitolina took an early break lead, but Paolini managed to level the score, forcing a tiebreak. In the decisive moments, the Ukrainian demonstrated composure and closed out the match in her favor.
This was Svitolina’s second consecutive win over an Italian opponent in the tournament—having previously eliminated Camila Giorgi in the third round. With this win, Elina has now reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals for the third time in her career.
In the next round, she will face the winner of the match between Jelena Ostapenko and Iga Świątek. Svitolina has previously played both opponents, setting the stage for a tense quarterfinal.
Elina Svitolina is currently ranked 19th in the WTA rankings, while Jasmine Paolini holds the 15th position. Despite being the lower seed, the Ukrainian displayed more consistent and confident play, especially in the key moments of the match.
