Japanese boxer Iwao Hakamada will receive monetary compensation for wrongly spending 47 years in prison.
He worked at a miso (soybean) paste factory. In 1966, the boxer was arrested and accused of murdering his boss, his wife, and two children. Khakamada admitted his guilt, but stated in court that he was forced to do so because of torture and beatings. The main evidence in the case was blood on the Japanese man's shirt.
In 2014, an independent examination showed that Iwao's DNA did not match the traces found at the crime scene. All evidence previously used in the case was declared invalid, and the man himself was released. The World Boxing Council awarded the Japanese a special championship belt for this occasion.
The day before, it became known that the Shizuoka Prefectural District Court in Japan ordered the government to pay 89-year-old Hakamada monetary compensation in the amount of 1.5 million dollars ($83 for each day spent in prison).
