Angelina defeated an eminent opponent from the aggressor state in a three-set match.
Ukrainian tennis player AngelinaKalinina reached the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami (USA).
In the 1/16 finals, a 27-year-old native of Novaya Kakhovka (No. 36 WTA) defeated the second racket of the world, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who, due to the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, was allowed to compete only in a neutral status.
The match between the Ukrainian and the tennis player from the aggressor state lasted 2 hours 3 minutes and ended with the triumph of Angelina after three sets –6:4, 1:6, 6:1.
This victory of our compatriot became a big sensation , because before the start of the meeting, the odds for Kalinina to advance to the next round were 8.40, and for Sabalenka’s success – 1.12.
For Angelina, this is the second victory in her career over an opponent from the top 5 of the world ranking. The first was in 2022 over Maria Sakkari from Greece.
Note that in the second round Angelina won a strong-willed victory over the former first racket of the world Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark – 5:7, 7:5, 6:4 .
In the 1/8 finals, Kalinina will play with Moscow native Yulia Putintseva (No. 68 WTA), who represents Kazakhstan.
