Patterson Park pool vandalism forced Baltimore officials to close the popular outdoor facility for the second time this summer. The pool shut on Saturday, July 25, but reopened under its normal schedule on Sunday, July 26, as Baltimore Chronicle reports.
Patterson Park pool reopens after safety treatment
Baltimore City Recreation and Parks initially described the damage as potentially cosmetic. A later inspection found displaced drain grates, debris and fecal contamination in the water.
Crews cleaned the facility and completed the required water treatment before allowing swimmers to return. Department spokeswoman Erin Smith said established health and safety procedures were followed.
“Our team followed established health and safety protocols,” Smith told The Baltimore Banner. She added that visitor safety remained the department’s priority.
The department advised residents to use another BCRP aquatic facility during the temporary closure. No problem with the pool’s operating system was initially detected.
Second vandalism-related closure this summer
The July incident followed another closure at Patterson Park Pool on June 6. That earlier case required an 8-to-12-hour filtration process before the facility reopened.

- July 26: the pool resumed its regular operating schedule;
- June 6: trash and feces were reportedly discovered in the water;

The latest closure lasted roughly one day. However, it became part of a wider problem affecting Baltimore’s public pools during the 2026 season. City officials reported five vandalism incidents at municipal pools since the season began on May 23.
