Google has announced a major redesign of Google Maps, significantly increasing its reliance on artificial intelligence to assist users in planning routes and discovering destinations, reports Baltimore Chronicle via ABC. The update introduces two new AI-driven tools, leveraging the capabilities of Google’s Gemini technology, to enhance the experience for more than 2 billion people worldwide who rely on the app.

The first of these tools, Ask Maps, builds upon the conversational features introduced last November and allows users to ask detailed questions that standard mapping tools could not previously answer. Users can request recommendations for nearby charging stations, cafes with minimal wait times, or even complex road trip itineraries involving multiple stops and sightseeing excursions. The AI draws on a vast database of over 300 million locations and incorporates reviews from more than 500 million contributors accumulated since the app’s launch over 20 years ago. Google has not confirmed whether it will allow businesses to pay for placement in Ask Maps recommendations. Initially, the feature will be available on the Google Maps mobile app for iPhone and Android in the U.S. and India, with plans to expand to desktops and additional countries.

The second AI feature, called Immersive Navigation, represents what Google executives describe as the most significant update to driving directions in the app’s history. Immersive Navigation provides a three-dimensional perspective to give drivers a clearer understanding of their surroundings in real time. Gemini-powered 3D renderings will highlight landmarks, road medians, and other terrain elements to help users orient themselves more accurately while driving. Google stated that the AI has been equipped with robust safeguards to prevent errors such as “hallucinations,” a term for fabricated locations sometimes produced by AI systems.

Immersive Navigation also aims to present the advantages and disadvantages of alternative driving routes and highlight optimal parking options at the destination. The feature will initially be rolled out in the U.S., available on the Google Maps app for iPhone and Android, as well as vehicles equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

This expansion of AI in Google Maps follows the company’s broader integration of Gemini technology into Gmail and the Chrome browser, allowing these widely used services to provide more proactive assistance to users. The rollout demonstrates Google’s confidence in the Gemini 3 model, which was released late last year, and underscores the company’s commitment to competing with emerging AI rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
