The U.S. faces a looming government shutdown as talks between President Trump and congressional Democrats fail, with major disagreements unresolved.

The United States is on the brink of a so-called government shutdown, as federal operations could be halted as early as Tuesday evening. Neither political party seems eager to prevent this outcome, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to BBC. A recent meeting between President Donald Trump and congressional Democratic leaders failed to produce any significant progress, and disagreements between the parties have deepened.

Vice President J.D. Vance told reporters after the White House meeting, “I think we are moving toward a shutdown because the Democrats do not want to do the right thing.” He added, “You cannot put a gun to the head of the American people and say, ‘If you do not do what the Democrats in the Senate and House want, we will shut down your government.'”

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer confirmed that major differences remain between the White House and his party, noting that these disagreements are still “very large.” This uncertainty increases the risk of a partial or complete halt of government functions in the country.
