On September 29, U.S. President Donald Trump met with Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress amid the approaching deadline for approving additional funding necessary to prevent a federal government shutdown, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to The Hill. According to sources, on Monday Trump met with four key party leaders from both chambers of Congress, marking a significant shift in his stance after previously canceling a meeting with Democratic leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, earlier this week.
In a joint statement, Schumer and Jeffries emphasized the Democrats’ willingness to negotiate: “President Trump has again agreed to meet in the Oval Office. As we have repeatedly emphasized, Democrats are ready to meet anywhere, anytime, and with anyone to discuss a bipartisan funding compromise that meets the needs of the American people. We are determined to prevent a shutdown and respond to the health crisis created by the Republicans.”
The meeting aimed to discuss mechanisms for additional federal budget funding and to reach a compromise between the parties to avoid halting government operations. Earlier in the week, Trump’s refusal to meet with Democratic leaders had caused tension in Congress and raised concerns over a potential government shutdown. The outcome of this meeting will shape the political strategy regarding federal government funding in the coming weeks.
