Hayden Panettiere death investigators are examining whether a fentanyl-laced oxycodone pill contributed to the actress’s death. The 36-year-old was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, as Baltimore Chronicle reports.

TMZ, citing law-enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation, reported the new details on September 14. Investigators reportedly suspect Panettiere took an oxycodone pill containing fentanyl on the morning she died.

Her official cause and manner of death remain pending toxicology results.

What investigators believe happened before Hayden Panettiere’s death

According to the TMZ report, Panettiere allegedly obtained black-market prescription drugs from a longtime supplier in Los Angeles.

Sources said she used several drugs while traveling from Los Angeles to South Carolina. Investigators believe she later took the suspected oxycodone pill in Greenville.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is examining where the pill came from. Agents are reportedly trying to trace it back to the alleged supplier.

What authorities have officially confirmed

Emergency crews responded after Panettiere was found unresponsive at a Greenville residence.

Police records said EMS performed life-saving measures for an extended period. She was pronounced dead shortly after 2:30 p.m.

An autopsy found no signs of physical trauma. Authorities also reported no evidence of foul play at the scene.

Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, was present at the residence. He later met with DEA investigators, according to reports.

Why the DEA is involved in the case

The DEA joined the investigation in August. Its involvement shifted attention toward the possible source of drugs connected with Panettiere’s death.

Investigators are now reportedly examining the supply chain behind the suspected pill. No alleged dealer has been publicly identified or charged.

Until toxicology results are released, the precise Hayden Panettiere cause of death remains officially undetermined.

Panettiere was best known for “Heroes,” “Nashville,” “Ice Princess” and the “Scream” franchise. Her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” was released months before her death.
