Maryland election judges are being recruited ahead of the November 3, 2026 general election. Residents can earn at least $250 while helping operate polling places across the state, as the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team notes.

The Maryland State Board of Elections says previous election experience is not required. Training is provided before Election Day.

Who can become a Maryland election judge?

Applicants generally must be at least 16 years old and registered to vote in Maryland. They must also read, speak and write English.

A 16-year-old applicant needs permission from a parent or guardian.

Election judges perform several practical duties during voting:

  • setting up and closing polling locations;
  • checking in voters;
  • answering voter questions;
  • assisting with election procedures;
  • helping maintain an orderly polling place.

The workday can be long. State officials warn that some assignments may require about 15 hours.

Election judges receive at least $250 for each election day worked. Qualified returning judges can receive at least $100 in additional compensation.

Pages work under the supervision of chief election judges. They assist voters and polling-place staff but cannot handle ballots or voting equipment.

They must complete required training and work at least one 4-hour shift. The program is designed specifically for students.

How to apply before the 2026 Maryland general election

Marylanders interested in paid election work can submit an application through the Maryland State Board of Elections.

Students seeking Page positions can use the state’s Election Day Pages program.

Election Day is November 3, with early voting scheduled from October 22 through October 29.
