Most often, old-style banknotes are counterfeited due to the fact that they are less secure.
In Ukraine, scammers do not refuse counterfeithryvnia banknotes. Over the past 2023, for every 1 million real banknotes there were about 2.1 counterfeit ones. Most often, Ukrainians slipped counterfeit banknotes of the old type – issued before 2015. First of all – 200 UAH.
The NBU reports this.
According to the bank, the following banknotes were found:
- 61% of the total number of seized counterfeits;
- 41% of their total amount.
In addition to 200, 500 hryvnia banknotes were also made on the side. Their share was:
- 24% of the total number of seized counterfeits;
- 41% of their total amount.
” The remaining counterfeit hryvnia banknotes withdrawn from circulation accounted for only 7%“, the regulator said.
Fraudsters counterfeit old-style banknotes due to the fact that they are less secure.
“In particular, high denominations of 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 hryvnia, which the National Bank introduced into circulation in 2015–2020. To protect these banknotes, which most often attract the attention of attackers, innovative optically variable elements are used, and they are extremely difficult for attackers to reproduce,” the NBU said.
How to recognize a forgery:
Fakes can be recognized, in particular, by touch.In particular, the following is checked:
- banknote paper;
- the relief of individual images from the front side of the banknote, which is ensured by a special type of printing.
Placing the bill against the light:
- The presence of watermarks.
