How the earnings of leaders in the energy sector of Ukraine have changed

The total income of the top 10 energy companies in Ukraine amounted to about UAH 750 billion. Half of the companies in the top are state-owned, another 4 belong to the SCM group of Rinat Akhmetov. For the second year in a row, D.Trading, part of the SCM group, remains the leader. This is reported by Opendatabot.

The leaders of the energy complex of Ukraine earned UAH 745.87 billion last year. This is 8% more than the total income of these companies in 2022 – UAH 688.45 billion.

This year’s rating includes 5 state-owned companies and 4 companies that are part of Rinat Akhmetov’s SCM group. Another company, Kiev Regional EC LLC, belongs to Nelya Kostenko.

As noted in Opendatabot, 8 of the top companies are engaged in the production and trading of electricity, and two more are engaged in gas trading.

Who is in the lead

“The leader of the group has remained unchanged for two years in a row – the D.Trading company, which is part of the SCM group. Last year, the company’s income increased by 15% compared to 2022: from UAH 144.18 billion to UAH 165.65 billion. At the same time, net profit increased by 30% in 2023,” analysts emphasize.

They add that the largest increase in income was achieved by two other companies, Rinat Akhmetov.

So, the company “ Kyiv Energy Services increased its income by 1.5 times, and the Dneprovsky Energy Services company increased its income by a third compared to 2022.

Analysts note that Dnepr Energy Services received the largest increase in profit – 2.5 times – among all companies included in the current energy index.

“But the fourth company of the SCM group – DTEK Zakhidenergo – on the contrary, over the year she reduced her income by 16%. “Last year, the company suffered losses of UAH 164 million,” notes OpenDatabot.

In total, the total income of 4 companies owned by Rinat Akhmetov amounted to UAH 262.48 billion in 2023. This is 35% of the total income of the top 10 Opendatabot Energy Index.

The ranking of the best companies in the energy sector included 5 state-owned companies, but only two managed to increase their income in the past. Thus, Ukrhydroenergo increased its earnings by 30%, and NAEC Energoatom – by 15%.

Note that the Ukrhydroenergo company received the largest net profit among the 10 Index companies in 2023 – UAH 17.3 billion. This is almost half more than in the first year of the full-scale invasion. The income of state-owned Ukrenergo remained almost unchanged for the year – more than UAH 82 billion.

Two more state-owned companies involved in gas trading reduced their income in 2023 to 2022: Naftogaz of Ukraine – by 4%, Naftogaz Trading – by 9%. Both companies suffered losses in 2023 – UAH 10.29 billion in total.

The last place in the top is occupied by Kiev Regional EC LLC, owned by Nelya Kostenko. The company increased its revenue by 29%, while its profits decreased by a quarter compared to the first year of the full-scale invasion.
