Researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast found a new genus and 5 new species of millipedes among the forest floor and loose soil while studying the growth of trees and vines in Tanzania's remote Udzungwa Mountains.
Experts compared their appearance to the aliens from the Star Wars films. According to scientists, the discovered centipedes are distinguished by their unusual heads, which are very similar to alien creatures.
«During field research, we record millipedes of all sizes , to measure forest restoration processes because they are excellent indicators of forest health», — said group leader Professor Andy Marshall.
It is worth noting that the largest centipedes in Africa can reach 35 cm in length.
