France has reported a record number of imported dengue cases just three months before the start of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Health authorities said 1,700 cases have been reported across the country since the start of the year, raising concerns ahead of the spectacle that is just around the corner. Health director-general Gregory Emery was quick to issue a stark warning at a press conference:
«Since January 1, 2024, 1,679 cases of dengue fever have been imported into metropolitan France, compared to 131 during the same period in 2023.
He noted that these cases correspond to people who have traveled to regions of the world, such as the French Antilles, where the virus is carried by Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
«This is a reflection of what is happening in the Antilles and, more broadly, in Latin America and the Caribbean, where dengue fever has been circulating at unprecedented levels since the beginning of the year», — said Sante Publique France head Caroline Semail.
Even before the Olympics, France broke the record for imported dengue cases in the capital region in 2019 thanks to an increased influx of people into the capital. It is worth recalling that the 2024 Olympics should take place from July 26 to August 11. The Olympic Games will be held in the French capital of Paris.
