Scientists have discovered that the population of the archaic human species Homo erectus was likely wiped out by an «extreme cold snap» about 1.1 million years ago.

The study is based on the analysis of marine and terrestrial proxy data from a deep-sea core on the Portuguese margin. The results showed pronounced climate variability on a millennium scale during the Ice Age from 1.154 to 1.123 million years ago.

This climate change peaked with a final cooling phase comparable to the most extreme events of the last 400,000 years. Confirming previous studies that pointed to warm and wet interglacial and temperate ice ages in Iberia, scientists suggest that these extreme conditions led to a sharp decline in environmental suitability among the Mediterranean during the final ice age stadial.
