For several centuries, Ukrainian men took their wife’s surname after marriage.

This information was reported by Radiotrek, reports URA-Inform.

However, in modern society the trend has changed, and now usually after marriage a woman switches to her husband's surname. Historical analysis shows that the transition to the husband's surname for Ukrainian women began around the 14th–15th centuries. This symbolized their entry into family life and signified the acceptance of the status of spouse.

In records of marriage and births of children of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially in metric books, the dominant role of men prevailed. These records contain data about the names and surnames of Ukrainians; this data was always recorded first on the marriage certificate and the child’s birth certificate.

At the same time, the woman’s record looked like this: next to her name they put the surname of her father, not her mother. At the same time, the women's surname was indicated in the possessive form, thereby indicating to whom it «belongs» – first to the father, and then to the spouse.

It is worth noting that during the period of Ukraine’s existence as part of the USSR, changing the surname for women was optional. The Code on Marriage and Family of the Ukrainian SSR provided the newlyweds with the opportunity to decide for themselves what surname they would have in common. They also had the right to remain under their own surnames.

We recall that it was previously reported that Ukrainians can now be fired from work because of relatives: changes to the Labor Code.
