Over 100,000 Ukrainians fell ill with SARS, flu, and COVID-19 in a week: there are fatalities

According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, during the week from January 13 to 19, 2025, more than 106 thousand people in Ukraine fell ill with influenza, acute respiratory viral infections and COVID-19. Half of them were children. Fatalities were recorded due to complications from these diseases, writes IZ.

Situation with morbidity

In total, during the specified period, doctors detected COVID-19 in 341 adults and 31 children. Due to complications caused by influenza, acute respiratory viral infections and coronavirus, 3,284 people were hospitalized. Of these, 1,411 were adults, 1,873 were children.

Unfortunately, two people died from complications of the flu – in Khmelnytskyi and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Five deaths due to COVID-19 were also registered. All of the deceased did not have preventive vaccinations.

Regional situation

A slight excess of the epidemic threshold was recorded only in Ternopil region. In 16 regions of Ukraine, doctors confirmed the circulation of influenza viruses of types A and B.

The epidemic season of influenza and SARS has been ongoing since September 30, 2024. In total, 1,819,714 people have fallen ill with influenza, SARS and COVID-19 in Ukraine since the beginning of the season. This is 20.5% less than in the previous year, but the risks remain high, especially for people from risk groups.

How to protect yourself from influenza and COVID-19

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that vaccination remains the most effective method of preventing influenza and COVID-19. Annual vaccination is especially recommended for people with chronic diseases, the elderly and medical workers.

It is worth remembering that the flu vaccine does not provide protection against COVID-19 and vice versa. However, both vaccinations can be done simultaneously or with a small interval.

As of January 19, 2025, 105,164 people in Ukraine were vaccinated against influenza. COVID-19 vaccinations remain free of charge and can be obtained from your family doctor. The influenza vaccine is available in pharmacies and can be purchased at your own expense.
