OpenAI demands ban on DeepSeek due to security threat

OpenAI, the American company behind the popular ChatGPT, has accused the Chinese lab DeepSeek of a potential threat to global security. As reported by IZ with reference to PCMag, in an appeal to the US government, OpenAI states that the Chinese authorities can “force” DeepSeek to harm Western countries. This happened against the background of growing tensions between Beijing and the West in the technological sphere.

OpenAI has raised concerns about potential intellectual property leaks and privacy threats. DeepSeek has been compared to tech giant Huawei, which is already under sanctions in the US and Europe. There are calls in Congress to ban DeepSeek from government devices, and some states, such as Texas and New York, have already imposed restrictions.

DeepSeek has attracted attention for its high performance and affordable price. Some analysts compare the situation to the launch of the Soviet Sputnik, which symbolized technological rivalry. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng met with Xi Jinping during a recent summit, and the company itself is rapidly gaining popularity in the United States.

However, critics suggest that OpenAI's claims may be motivated by a desire to eliminate a competitor. At the same time, OpenAI is facing lawsuits over the use of copyrighted material to train its models.

The White House is currently considering a complete ban on DeepSeek, but a final decision has not yet been made. Some countries, including Australia, South Korea, and Taiwan, have already restricted access to the app on government devices.
