The day before, on January 10, the Kremlin confirmed its readiness to meet with newly elected White House chief Donald Trump, without setting “preconditions,” but emphasizing that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's negotiating position is unchanged.

As NBN reports, citing the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), despite Moscow’s so-called “readiness” to negotiate with Western leaders, no discussions with the Kremlin will be able to guarantee stable peace in Ukraine until Russian leader Vladimir Putin changes his inadequate demands on Kiev.
Based on the words of Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov yesterday, Putin intends to maintain his “repeatedly voiced” approach to Ukraine, clearly outlined in June last year, duplicated during the “Direct Line” in December.
Recall that in June 2024, Putin demanded that Kiev remove/replace President Volodymyr Zelensky and the government, resorting to traditional rhetoric about “denazification” and “demilitarization”, but adding that Russia must be guaranteed the cession of significant territories in the east and south (including those regions that the terrorist state could not occupy) Ukraine, which actually means the capitulation of our country.
ISW analysts summarized:
…[Achieving a full-fledged and stable peace is impossible] as long as Putin remains a supporter of these [above-described] demands, despite the Kremlin's “readiness” to negotiate with Western leaders.
