In Utah, during a speech on the campus of Utah Valley University, political activist and prominent supporter of Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk, was targeted in an attack. He was shot in the neck and hospitalized in critical condition, reports Baltimore Chronicle.
Soon after, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death. On his social media platform Truth Social, he announced a four-day national mourning period lasting until Sunday evening and ordered the lowering of the national flags across the country.
“Great and even legendary Charlie Kirk is dead. No one understood and empathized with the youth of the United States better than him. Everyone loved and admired him, especially me. Melania and I extend our deepest condolences to his wife Erika and his family. Charlie, we love you!” Trump wrote.
Charlie Kirk was 31 years old. He gained prominence as a political commentator, podcast host, and founder of the organization Turning Point USA, which promotes conservative values among students in schools, colleges, and universities.
According to preliminary reports, the shooter fired from a distance of approximately 100–200 meters. Initially, authorities reported that the suspect had been detained, but it later became clear that the attacker remains at large.
