President Donald Trump on Monday warned that he could prevent the opening of the new Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, until the United States receives what he describes as proper compensation and respect from Canada, reports Baltimore Chronicle via Reuters.
In a post on social media, Trump stated, “I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve.” While the president did not mention the bridge by name, the comments appear to reference the six-lane Gordie Howe International Bridge project.
The bridge, valued at $4.7 billion, has been under construction since 2018 and is financed and managed by the Canadian government. Construction is largely complete, and officials expect the bridge to open early this year, although no official date has yet been confirmed.
Trump also indicated plans to “start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY,” suggesting that talks over the bridge and potential U.S. compensation could begin soon. He reiterated longstanding criticism of Canada, which has persisted since the onset of trade tensions between the two nations. “With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical,” Trump added in his social media post.
