In China, artificial intelligence tools were used to alter the Australian horror film “Together”, replacing a homosexual couple with a heterosexual one, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing BBC.

The preview of the film, starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, took place on September 12 in several Chinese cinemas. Only after screenshots of the original scenes went viral online did viewers notice the differences in the Chinese release. Some intimate and nudity scenes were digitally altered — in one shower sequence with the main character, a female figure was added to cover his body.

The strongest criticism, however, came from the changes made to the same-sex couple: one male character’s face was digitally replaced with that of a woman, and all references to homosexual relationships were removed.

China has a history of censoring such content. Previously, in the Oscar-winning film “Oppenheimer” featuring actress Florence Pugh, AI was used to digitally place a black dress over her nude body.

On September 24, Neon, the global distributor of “Together”, issued a statement condemning Chinese distributor Hishow. Neon emphasized it had not approved any unauthorized edits and demanded the circulation of the modified version be stopped.
