OpenAI has launched a new web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, built around the artificial intelligence of ChatGPT. The developers describe it as a tool that combines the features of a traditional browser with a personal AI assistant capable of understanding user context, helping complete tasks without switching tabs, and remembering past interactions, reports Baltimore Chronicle with a link to the official OpenAI blog.
ChatGPT Atlas enables users to work across the web with ChatGPT directly in the same browser window. With built-in memory, the system can recall previous conversations, visited sites, and actions to provide relevant guidance or generate data summaries. For example, ChatGPT can gather all the job postings a user viewed last week and create an overview of industry trends to help prepare for interviews.
According to college student Yogya Kalra, who participated in testing, Atlas significantly simplifies learning. She noted that previously she had to switch between slides and ChatGPT, taking screenshots to ask questions, while now ChatGPT instantly interprets the page content and helps deepen understanding of the material.
A key feature of the browser is the “agent mode,” which allows ChatGPT to perform actions on behalf of the user — such as researching information, scheduling meetings, or making online purchases. This feature is already available in the preview version for users of Plus, Pro, and Business plans.
Atlas also offers full privacy control. Users can view, archive, or delete saved data, open incognito windows, or disable browser memories entirely. OpenAI emphasizes that browsing content is not used to train models unless the user opts in via settings.
Additional updates include enhanced security measures to protect against harmful instructions and unauthorized access to personal data. ChatGPT Atlas cannot execute code, download files, or access other applications on the user’s device, and it pauses actions on financial websites to prevent unintended operations.
Currently, ChatGPT Atlas is available to macOS users in Free, Plus, Pro, and Go versions. For business clients, it is offered in beta, with plans to expand to Windows, iOS, and Android in the near future. The browser can be downloaded at chatgpt.com/atlas.
